Workshop on Evaluating the Reliability and Relevance of Environmental Exposure Data

21 October 2025 10:00-15:30, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
Environmental risk assessments of chemicals assess the likelihood of adverse effects occurring on ecosystems, and are based on two key aspects, the hazard potential of the substance, and its exposure to potential ecological receptors.
Formalised approaches for evaluating the ecotoxicological hazard information relating to chemicals have been available for some time, but comparable schemes have not previously been available for the evaluation of environmental exposure data.
Criteria for Reporting and Evaluating Exposure Datasets (CREED) is a practical tool that provides a systematic approach and criteria for the consistent and transparent evaluation of the reliability (quality) and relevance (fitness for purpose) of exposure data for use in environmental risk assessments of chemicals.
Relevance is the extent to which the data is appropriate for the purpose of the assessment.
Reliability is the inherent quality of the data, focusing on the methods used for its collection and reporting.
Datasets may have limitations in terms of their reliability or relevance, and the recording of these limitations ensures that they are taken in to account in the use of the data.
The workshop will involve a number of sessions with invited speakers giving presentations on relevant aspects of exposure data evaluation, with opportunities for discussion.
Presentations will cover the following issues:
Session 1: CRED Evaluation of hazard data, Reliability of exposure data, Relevance of exposure data, Reporting of CREED assessments
Session 2: Practical experiences of CREED, Regulatory perspectives of CREED, Academic perspectives of CREED
Session 3: Short examples of applications
